I am a person who needs a great deal of privacy. He was a person who couldn't stand to have his partner ever shut away from him. If I wanted to take a snooze and go in in the afternoon and shut the door, or if I wanted to sit at the sewing machine and the door was closed, he'd throw it open and say, "What are you doing in here?" This sort of thing.

He had this grandiose idea that when I had this job with Central Arizona Light and Power I would bring home my paycheck and give it to him and he would use it to develop a little real estate he had.

He was a financial failure always. The houses were never paid for, the taxes were always delinquent, everything was in arrears. This is so in violation of everything that I had been reared to believe and the way I practice. It was just different ideals all through. It's ridiculous that I had gone with him for ten years, and he had been arguing with me those ten years to marry him, but I didn't realize that these things were so important to me or that they would be so violated in this relationship.

[I married because of] peer pressure. Every one of my friends at that age were already married, having children. Not that I wanted to be married and have children, but it was the thing to do. He was the most persistent thing in the world.45
